From Artificial Genome to Artificial Life: Hold Your (Synthetic) Horses
The creation of an entirely artificial genome by J. Craig Venter Institute researchers has set the science world abuzz, and with good reason: it’s a landmark step on the road to synthetic organisms that could someday produce everything from clean fuel to better medicines. But scientists caution that the step, though large, is still just a beginning. Much more remains to be learned before the first artificial organisms are up and running, much less running our cars.
